Elon Sophomore Touching the Hearts of Children

By: Micaela Ryan

This week we are shining the spotlight on an Elon University sophomore helping young children in the community. Abigail Fisher volunteers with the Boys & Girls Club in Burlington, North Carolina. Her services include building a better volunteer program and implementing a new program for children. The program pairs children with special needs, or who need extra attention, with volunteers who are willing to invest and support them.

Fisher joined the Boys & Girls Club after working with the non-profit for a service class. The course inspired her to learn more and pursue student volunteering. Fisher is now responsible for day-to-day duties and helping other volunteers with hands-on experience. “We are taking underrepresented children and giving them a place to learn and explore  more about themselves, their relationships and how the world works,” said Fisher, “taking the step to go outside of the ‘Elon bubble’ and interact with people you would never encounter otherwise is a moving experience.”

“My supervisor often says the club is not a daycare, it is a privilege to be there and get to learn and have these experiences. The Boys & Girls Club is extremely inspiring and having two club alumni, who are currently working as staff employees, shows the dedication members have to the Club, and their appreciation for what they were given when they were younger,” explains Fisher. Fisher is forever grateful for the life lessons and fun-loving group she calls family.

The Boys & Girls Club of Burlington works to inspire and enable youth in the community. The Club’s programs focus on helping kids succeed in school, live healthier lives and become tomorrow’s leaders.
